At Googles most recent conference, the first hardware to run the new Chrome operating system was presented from top brands Samsung and Acer. These devices have been named Chromebooks, offering the long awaited Chrome OS, which differs from operating systems like OS X and Windows.
Chrome essentially offers a cloud based OS which links in to a variety of Google services online. This includes Gmail, to docs, youtube and more. Opening a Chromebook meets you with the web browser window, somewhat similar to the Google Chrome browser. With a startup time of just 8 seconds, internet browsing is the core function of the Chromebook.
The Chromebooks are more like netbooks rather than high end laptops, as they rely mostly on web services rather than processor heavy tasks such as media editing. Google docs offers productivity applications, while other apps include Maps, instant messaging and more. You are not just limited to native apps either, with the availability of apps from the Google chrome Web store. Here you can find apps ranging from games like Angry Birds, just released after the announcement of Chromebooks, or photo editing apps and more. Most of these apps require internet access, however Google plans to improve the offline usability of such apps in the future.
The Samsung and Acer Chromebooks:
These are called the Series 5 chrome books and feature 12.1 inch screens, duel core intel atom processors and 16Gb solid state drives for offline storage. Also included is wireless N capabilities and the choice of two colours and Wifi or 3G models. Battery life is a solid 8.5 hours.
Acer’s Chromebook is similar for processor and drive storage, but has a smaller screen (11.6 inches) and slightly shorter battery life (6 hours)–although, it adds an HDMI video output port. The acer models are also available in Wifi or 3G varieties.
Both chrome books offer full sized keyboards and HD webcams, memory card readers, 2 USB ports and 3G models are available with Data plans for internet usage.
